AMCC provides an easy to read summary of the NPFMC Dec. meeting, plus links to 2024 fish catches/bycatches.
Why is the NPFMC logo being used to promote the A80 bottom trawl fleet?
NOAA Fisheries says AK’s resident killer whale stock can withstand losses of 19 animals a year; fewer than 6 animals from the smaller transient stock.
“The NPFMC has substantial impacts to western Alaska, so it should have substantial representation.”
“Keeping trawlers rich is more important to decision-makers than stopping or reducing bycatch — and its impact on Alaskans.”
A80 trawlers downplay and distort the bycatch saying “these killer whales are not listed as ‘threated’ or endangered species.”

Current groundfish harvest specs are based on a 2007 management plan and an EIS from 2004.
After nearly 10 years of discussion by the NPFMC, trawlers will be held to the same standard as all other AK halibut users.
Focus now is on bycatch of salmon, crab and halibut; herring and other species also will soon be reviewed.
The NPFMC continues to shift the conservation responsibility from trawlers… to Alaska families, rural residents, businesses and fishermen.
