Alaska Representative Mary Peltola has outlined several questions about the killer whale deaths that she wants answered, including when NOAA Fisheries intends to share results of its investigation.

Meanwhile, NOAA said in a press release on September 21: “The agency is working quickly to evaluate these incidents and will share findings as soon as possible, after all required analyses are completed.* We expect to have some preliminary information within the next few weeks.

The asterisk following the statement “after all required analyses are completed.”* 

* NOAA Fisheries monitors and evaluates bycatch of protected species in commercial fishing gear through an analysis required under the Marine Mammal Protection Act to determine whether the animals were dead before being caught, or were killed or seriously injured by gear.

Meanwhile, still waiting for NOAA’s findings…
