AK Bycatch Advisory Council Meets Oct. 24

Bycatch utilization is a topic on the AK Bycatch Council agenda!

Agenda: Salmon Task Force, red king crab tagging, ecosystem monitoring, bycatch utilization

The Alaska Bycatch Advisory Council will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, October 24 to update Alaskans on advancements being made to reduce bycatch in Alaska’s fisheries.

The six-member Alaska Bycatch Council was established in March by ADF&G Commissioner Doug Vincent-Lang to build on the recommendations outlined by the AK Bycatch Review Task Force. The task force was created by Gov. Dunleavy in December 2022. All members of the new council were part of the bycatch task force, which met 45 times over the course of last year.

The October 24 meeting will be the fourth meeting of the Council. Presentations on the agenda include:

*report on the bycatch town hall held at Kodiak in mid-September
*presentation by the Alaska Salmon Research Task Force
*Ecosystem Ecosystem Monitoring and Assessment Program; Ed Farley, Program Manager/AK Fishery Science Center
*Bristol Bay red king crab tagging study; Scott Goodman, Director of Bering Sea Fisheries Research Foundation

Council subcommittees will provide updates on:

*Frequently Asked Questions for website
*Research
*Utilization of bycatch

The Council also will discuss a report it is providing to the ADF&G Commissioner, other bycatch recommendations to address and the roadmap and dates for spring meetings.

Public comments are encouraged with a three minute limit.

AK Bycatch Council members

Linda Kozak of Kodiak is Council chair. She owns a fishery consulting service and served on the bycatch task force as a representative of halibut fishermen.

Kevin Delaney represents personal use and sport fishermen and is the founder of Delaney Outdoors, a fishery consulting firm he opened in 2010. He was the director for ADF&G’s Division of Sport Fish from 2005 to 2010. He was on the Bycatch Task Force Gulf of Alaska Halibut and Salmon Committee.

Brian Gabriel has been the mayor of the City of Kenai since 2016. He was chair of the Bycatch Task Force Gulf of Alaska Halibut and Salmon Committee.

Stephanie Madsen represents the trawl sector and is Director of the At-Sea Processors Association. Madsen is a former chair of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. She was co-chair of the Bycatch Task Force Western AK Salmon Committee.

Karma Ulvi is the Chief of the Native Village of Eagle and the Tribal Administrator with Tanana Chiefs Conference. She also was on the Bycatch Task Force Western AK Salmon committee and serves as the subsistence representative from a Yukon River community.

John Jensen of Petersburg has over a half century of experience in Alaska’s commercial fishing industry and is serving his seventh term on the Alaska Board of Fisheries. Jensen also was appointed to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council in 2018. He was Chair of the AK Bycatch Review Task Force.
